club History
The current Shifnal Golf Club
was formed on 8th April 1929, at a meeting of 36 members
held at the Jerningham Arms, Shifnal. A club had existed
previous* to this, but since there are no records from that
period it is was decided that 1929 was to be the official
formation date.
*Shifnal Golf Club is mentioned in the minutes of the Shropshire Golf
Union when the union was first formed in 1913.
The club's first location was a 9-hole course at Lodge Hill, Shifnal;
built before the first World War but possibly un-used during the war years.
In 1963, Shifnal Golf Club moved to Decker Hill Hall. The Golf Club were looking for a new site after their
original lease at Lodge Hill came close to termination and so
Decker Hill proved the ideal new location, with the house
becoming the club house. The park’s mature trees were thereafter
supplemented by new plantings under the direction of the golf
course architects Ken Cotton and Frank Pennink, the figures on
the course still surveyed by a domed temple, high up in the
shrub walk above the house, which may date from William
Botfield’s Regency landscaping of the park.
A booklet "Shifnal Golf Club 1929 - 1995' (link to be
supplied) is available giving the full
history of the club during those years. The club is indebted to Mr Brian
Longden, past captain and president of the club, for his work in compiling
the booklet, without whose work much of the information contained would have
been lost to posterity.
club house History
Our club house, known as Decker Hill Hall, was built in the first half of
the 19th century. It was the home of the Botfield family from 1851 through to the early part
of the 20th century. According to the 1871 census, W.B.G. Botfield Esq (Justice of Peace of Salop & Montgomery & Clergyman of the Church of England), lived there with his family and 12 house servants.
